It’s not frozen yoghurt. It’s not ice cream. It’s not gelato. So what the hell is it?

Tasti D-Lite is a frozen dairy treat for health conscious individuals who don’t want to sacrifice their dessert.

It technically doesn’t have enough butterfat and solids to qualify as ice cream, and it’s not yoghurt either as there is not a yoghurt culture in sight. Instead, it’s made from a special formula using all natural ingredient and specially designed hardware. Personally, I prefer the full fat stuff, but this did the job.

Most flavours of Tasti D-Lite have 70 calories, 1.5 grams of fat and 13 grams of carbohydrate per 120ml serving.

All flavours are made form either a chocolate or vanilla dairy base, depending on your choice. Flavours ‘on tap’ rotate daily and are available straight from that dispenser. There are over 100 flavours available including everything from brownie batter, chocolate caramel meringue and red velvet cake, to acai berry, black cherry and pina colada.

Flavours such as peanut butter ‘n jelly, pumpkin cheesecake and s’mores hark back to Tasti’s New York history. The company boasts that their product is featured on popular television shows such as Sex and the City and 30 Rock, and that Heidi Klum, Mary-Kate Olsen and Taylor Swift are regular customers.

The Chapel Street flagship store had their official opening earlier in the week. The shop features a fun-loving design with fairy floss pink and chalk blue walls. A small but satisfying selection of toppings sit behind the counter, including marshmallows, chocolate flakes, rainbow sprinkles and various fruit toppings. Hopefully in the future they will add a larger selection.

Tasti has been in business for 20 years and while they specialise in their creamy, light and fluffy dessert, they also offer smoothies, milkshakes, sundaes, cakes, and pies.

If you’re on a health kick but just can’t ignore your sweet tooth, pop into Tasti D-Lite and “dessert your guilt.” As for me? I'll be sticking to the naughtier options.
